Should I use Meta Ads or Google Ads?
Use Google Ads when your customers already search for what you sell; it captures existing demand at the moment of intent. Use Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) when you need to create demand by reaching people before they search. Most growing businesses end up using both: Google for high-intent enquiries, Meta for awareness, promotions and retargeting.
The core difference: demand capture vs demand creation
Google Ads shows your ad when someone types a keyword. The person has already told Google what they want, such as “aircond servicing Cheras” or “stainless steel tank supplier Malaysia”. You are competing to be chosen.
Meta Ads shows your ad in Facebook and Instagram feeds, Stories and Reels to people who match an audience you define. They weren't looking for you. You are competing for attention, which makes the creative and the offer decisive.
Side-by-side comparison
| Google Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Reaches people who are… | Searching right now | Scrolling, not yet searching |
| Lead intent | Usually higher | Usually lower, varies with offer |
| Lead volume | Limited by search demand | Can scale with budget and audience |
| What decides results | Keywords, relevance, landing page | Creative, audience, offer |
| Needs a landing page | Yes | Optional (lead forms, WhatsApp) |
| Best for | B2B, urgent services, comparison shoppers | Consumer products, launches, visual offers, retargeting |
When Google Ads is the better place to start
- People search for your product or service by name or problem.
- You sell B2B, where buyers research suppliers.
- Your service is urgent: repairs, clinics, legal help, logistics.
- Your Meta leads are plentiful but low quality.
When Meta Ads is the better place to start
- Few people search for what you sell, because it is new, niche or impulse-driven.
- Your product is visual: food, fashion, beauty, property, lifestyle.
- You are launching something and need awareness fast.
- You want to retarget website visitors and social engagers.
Example: the same budget, two businesses
An industrial equipment distributor and a new bubble tea brand each have the same monthly budget. The distributor's buyers search Google for specific product names; Meta would reach many people who will never buy industrial equipment. The bubble tea brand has almost no search demand yet; Meta, with strong video and a launch offer targeted near its outlets, will create the awareness Google can't.
After a few months, both usually add the other channel: the distributor retargets site visitors on Meta, and the bubble tea brand captures branded searches on Google.
How GETDO decides
We don't start with a platform. In the Get to know (G) stage we look at how your customers make decisions: do they search, compare, ask friends or discover by accident? That tells us which channel to start with, how to split budget, and what the landing experience needs. Then we measure cost per qualified lead, not just cost per click.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Ads more expensive than Meta Ads in Malaysia?
Cost per click is often higher on Google, but intent is higher too. Compare cost per qualified lead or cost per customer rather than cost per click.
Can I run Meta Ads without a website?
Yes, using Meta lead forms or click-to-WhatsApp ads. Google Search ads need a landing page.
Should a small business run both?
Start with the channel closest to how your customers decide, prove it works, then add the second. Splitting a small budget across both too early often produces weak data on each.
